In 2017, I was in a car accident, and I thought, as did the doctor, that I had a stroke. However, one of the doctors at the University of Rochester definitely thinks I had a traumatic brain injury due to hitting my head.
Two years later, I started painting at the end of 2019. Then the pandemic hit in 2020, and I had an easel, three or four canvases, and a bunch of acrylic paint that I had not been using. I started painting with my left hand, which is not my good hand, per se, or non-dominant is the technical term. Because I was inspired by the color fields of Mark Rothko, I decided to try that technique, and painting after painting, I started getting some really interesting results.
Because I was getting interesting results, I also found that the time passed more quickly. My easel and my canvas were literally 2 feet from my bed. It was a therapeutic growing experience as I was going through physical therapy and occupational therapy, learning how to use my left hand, my right hand a little bit, and how to walk and all that stuff.
So now, when I paint, you're looking at some things that are done entirely with my left hand. Sometimes I use my right hand, which I cannot raise above my waist and cannot extend outward very much, to use the tape, and it creates an angle defect because of my disability.
The angle defect, my love for color, vibrant hues, pigments, and inspiration from abstract artists that I keep finding as I research art and go to the local museum, is my new inspiration. Also, my dog Michelle, who is a Boston terrier, is probably one of the best dogs I've ever had in my life.
Thank you for listening. This is a blog that I wrote using dictation, and it's actually pretty cool as long as you speak clearly. Thank you for being a fan, and check out my shop where you can find affordable work and a little bit more expensive work for the larger paintings. I appreciate your time and wish everyone well and a happy holiday.
Sincerely, Scott
